Types of Garage Doors: A Brief List of Available Options
There are a wide variety of garage doors that you can choose from. Which one you choose depends on what you want your garage door to look like, and the surrounding property. We have a warehouse full of all the options you could think of. For example:
Single Panel Garage Doors
Single panel garage doors are made of one single panel, that in the closed position, will swing up and overhead with a hinge on each side to the fully open position. One disadvantage of this type of door is the fact that when you open the door it partially extends outside the garage itself. This can be an inconvenience in some circumstances like if when you are ready to park you must park away from the door several feet to avoid getting hit as it lifts.
Sectional Garage Doors
Sectional garage doors are in most cases, constructed with 3-8 panels that slide up and overhead along tracks. Sectional garage doors take up the same amount of room that a monolithic door but they have the added advantage of not opening outside the garage. In addition to this there are many different advantages to getting a sectional garage door including but not limited to:
- Sectional doors do not require any outside garage door space
- Each panel has a connection to the door independent from the others.
This adds more reliability and robustness compared to monolithic doors, which have only a few track connections for the entire panel.

Types of Spring Lift Mechanisms There are two types of garage door spring lift mechanisms that allow your garage door to run smoothly. They are:
Torsion Spring Lift Mechanisms
A torsion spring garage door spring lift mechanisms are constructed with two tightly wound up springs on a steel shaft with cable drums on either end. The entire torsion spring lift mechanism is mounted on the header wall above the garage door and it has 3 main supports. The support is a plate with a steel or nylon bearing and two end bearing plates at both ends. The actual springs are made of steel wire with a stationary cone at one end and a winding cone at the other.
The stationary cone is attached to the center plate. The winding cone consists of holes every 90 degrees, used for winding the springs, and two set screws to secure the springs to the shaft. Counterbalance cables run from the roller brakes to the cable drums. When you open and close your garage door, the stored tension lifts the door and turns the shaft. This is what turns the cables and they unwrap from the drums and they return to full tension.
Extension Spring Lift Mechanism
An extension spring counterbalance systems are made with a pair of springs running parallel to track running left to right. This type of garage door spring mechanism uses a system of pulleys and counterbalance cables. When the garage door is raised the springs contact and the door rises.
